Why Use this Program? A History of Success

Introduction

Co-author Dr. Phyllis Haddox introduces the program. She shares her dedication and confidence in her commitment to ensure that all children can learn. This video presents the research and successful history behind the book she co-authored, Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.

Sound-Symbol Relationships

General Training

In this video, Phyllis reviews all the sound-symbols that are taught in the book. You practice saying each sound as she explains how to pronounce the sounds in the best way to make blending (sounding out) much easier for beginning readers. She also demonstrates the teaching techniques to make learning fun.

Blending Sounds

General Training

Dr. Phyllis Haddox demonstrates and teaches YOU an important skill you need to master BEFORE you teach a child. That skill is BLENDING – SAYING THE SOUNDS WITHOUT STOPPING or NOT TAKING A BREATH BETWEEN SOUNDS. You want to be a good model when you to teach this reading pre-skill, because when you teach BLENDING well, you make it easier for children to hear a whole word when they actually see the symbols and sound out a word.

Reading the Script and Bringing the Exercises to Life

General Training

Dr. Haddox reveals her dedication and confidence to her commitment to ensure that ALL children can learn. This video presents the research and successful history behind the book she co-authored, Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.

Lesson 1

Demonstration

In this classic video, co-author, Dr. Phyllis Haddox brings Lesson 1 of Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons to life with a 3 year old child. Note how she engages the child with her pacing of the lesson, use of immediate positive corrections, and frequent, specific praise. The child is learning and having fun!

Lesson 1

Specific Training

Co-author of Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, Dr. Phyllis Haddox, demonstrates and trains a parent how to teach all six exercises in Lesson 1–following the book’s script and personalizing it with enthusiasm, positive corrections, and praise. (Note: sounds writing exercise is included for more practice at saying sounds with another modality, not to teach penmanship.)

Lesson 13 Word Reading

Demonstration

Co-author, Dr. Phyllis Haddox, teaches a young child the Word Reading task in Lesson 13, p.66. Notice Dr. Haddox’s pacing, positive corrections, and praise.

Lesson 13 Story Reading with Comprehension

Demonstration

Co-author of Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, Dr. Phyllis Haddox, teaches a young emerging reader the Story Reading and Comprehension exercises from Lesson 13 of her book. Note the positive interactions (even during corrections) and all the child’s smiles.

Lesson 20 Word Reading with Quick Sounds

Demonstration

In this classic video, Dr. Phyllis Haddox, co-author, teaches a 4-year old girl how to BLEND the sounds in a word that begins with “c”–a “quick” or “stop” sound–in Lesson 20 of Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.

Lesson 20 Rhyming

Specific Training

In this video Dr. Phyllis Haddox, co-author of “Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons,” works with a workshop participant to train him to teach an important blending skill, rhyming. Since this particular rhyming exercise has many steps it should be practiced to proficiency in order to skillfully use the techniques that result in a child successfully blending a list of several sound-symbols (including the quick sound, “c”) that the child sees on the page with the end of a word that the instructor (parent) says.

Lesson 53 Advanced Story Reading

Demonstration

In the beginning lessons of Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, a child learns to sound out and say words aloud, then the book has exercises to gradually transition into internally sounding out, and finally reading words “the fast way.” In this brief video, you’ll see a mom (halfway through the book) directing her son to read the title, then to find the period or question mark of a sentence and next read that whole sentence “the fast way” (by whole words). Finally, mom does the picture-comprehension exercise with her son. Notice their positive interactions and how much the son enjoys the story.

Lesson 74 Advanced Word Reading

Demonstration

In this video, a mother demonstrates teaching an advanced word-reading exercise to her son. By Lesson 72 of Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, a child will have learned how to rapidly sound out a word silently, then say the word aloud (“the fast way”).  This mom is following the scripted steps of the exercise and makes it seem quite natural.  She has her son first read the word (covering the ending), then uncovers the ending and has him read the whole word.  Notice her quick pacing and reinforcing interactions with her son.  He is confident and fluent in his responses.
